Sacred Visitor

Grief never needs a logical reason to visit

It comes, sometimes,

suddenly

nonsensically

inexplicably

Quietly

spilling unbidden from your eyes

slipping silently down your face

stealing your breath

clenching your teeth

running from your nose

constricting your throat

tightening your chest

aching your heart

sickening your stomach

crumbling you to the floor

fogging your mind, consuming your thoughts

Laying bare your love for that something, someone

Stripping away carefully constructed protective layers

Crashing against your immortality

Exposing your vulnerability, fragility, humanity

I hope, though

whenever it comes

for whatever reason

however it finds you

you aren’t afraid to invite it in

sit with it for a while

unhurriedly

honestly

for as long as you need to

embrace it for a while

accepting no shame

making no excuses or qualifications

as much as you need to

deliberately

quietly

gently

It is evidence that your soul has been

touched, moved, marked

deeply

unknowingly, maybe

significantly, definitely

beautifully eternally

sacredly
